Early lessons on the value of human life

We had a small computer lab in my elementary school. Once a month or so we'd learn to type a little, and play some math games. And if we were good, they let us play Oregon Trail for a few minutes at the end! Yay! Of course we'd all name our trekking party after our friends.

Now, you can't make it to Oregon in the 10 or so minutes we had. So we'd all set our teams' pace to "Grueling" and just see how far we got.

I don't think I need to tell the reader that bad things happen to your party when you're traveling at a grueling pace. Cholera, broken bones, dysentery, drowning, indian attacks, snake bites...

And after after visiting the computer lab for a couple months . . . you start to . . . get used to everything you've ever loved dying. Tragically.
